More Than 16,000 Children Have Been Born Through IVF in Kazakhstan, with at Least Two to Three Babies Born Every Day at Major Centers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

ASTANA, March 17 \u2014 Sputnik, Aiguzel Kadir.<\/strong> Twenty-two years ago, on July 31, 1996, a baby girl conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF) was born in Kazakhstan. Intelligent, beautiful, tall, and pleasant to talk to \u2014 this is how reproductive medicine specialist and embryologist Saltanat Baikoshkarova now describes the first IVF baby born in Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Kazakhstan\u2019s First IVF Baby Lives Today<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the summer of 1996, Saltanat Baikoshkarova sent an urgent announcement to media outlets across the country: \u201cKazakhstan\u2019s first baby conceived through IVF has been born.\u201d<\/strong> More than two decades have passed since then, but memories of that day still bring tears to her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the first child born through IVF in Kazakhstan is studying in England. Her parents live in Almaty and prefer to avoid contact with the media, as they have grown tired of the intense public attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHer father is a lawyer, and so is her mother. Every year, until she turned ten, we visited them for her birthday. The last time they visited us was when she was 20 years old. She came to the clinic while visiting Kazakhstan during her university holidays from England. Her parents told her that the doctors at the clinic had played a part in helping her come into this world,\u201d Saltanat Baikoshkarova<\/strong>, Scientific Director of the Ecomed IVF Center and the specialist behind the birth of Kazakhstan\u2019s first IVF baby, told Sputnik Kazakhstan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young woman was presented with a copy of the book An Honest Story<\/em>, published to mark the 20th anniversary of Ecomed, the country\u2019s first in vitro fertilization laboratory. The book describes all the obstacles that the pioneer of reproductive medicine in Kazakhstan had to overcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think she understood everything. Her mother asked us to check her health. Everything is excellent. In the future, she will be able to have children naturally,\u201d Baikoshkarova added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking back at 1996, Saltanat Baikoshkarova recalls how deeply she worried that her dream, which had once seemed almost impossible, might never come true. The woman who would eventually give birth to Kazakhstan\u2019s first IVF baby initially became pregnant with twins. However, after some time, one of the embryos stopped developing, the Director of the Ecomed IVF Center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was extremely worried that nothing would work at all because I felt a tremendous responsibility toward our patients and toward my colleague, physician Tatyana Rubashina, whom I had selected from among many candidates. In terms of her professional and personal qualities, she was exactly the right person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was frightened because I was taking both her and a nurse away from the public healthcare system. At that time, it seemed terrifying because private medicine practically did not exist, apart from private dentistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I was rewarded for all my struggles, hard work, and suffering. With our sixth patient, we achieved a pregnancy,\u201d said the Doctor of Biological Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How a Kazakhstani Specialist Pioneered the IVF Revolution<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Saltanat Baikoshkarova herself describes the story of establishing Kazakhstan\u2019s first IVF Center and successfully introducing IVF technology in a country that was only beginning to recover after the collapse of the Soviet Union as something of a \u201cfairy tale.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1978, when Saltanat was 18 years old, she came across an article about British woman Louise Brown \u2014 the world\u2019s first person born as a result of in vitro fertilization on July 25, 1978. At the time, the young Kazakhstani woman had no idea that she would devote her entire life to helping people who had lost hope of having children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A year later, she married and personally encountered the problem of infertility. Saltanat Baikoshkarova and Batyr Bekmussayev welcomed their first child only seven years after they were married.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While working as a laboratory physician at the Marriage and Family Consultation Center at a polyclinic, she performed semen analyses and introduced artificial insemination \u2014 the introduction of a partner\u2019s sperm into the uterine cavity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe could not help women whose fallopian tubes were blocked or absent. Only IVF could help them. Every day, 15 to 20 couples came to see me. For the hundredth, the thousandth time, I had to explain to them that IVF was simply not available in Kazakhstan. At that time, the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology did not really understand what it was, and no one was even raising the issue,\u201d Saltanat Baikoshkarova said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her, IVF laboratories for infertility treatment existed at the time only in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Kharkiv. The fact that Kazakhstan still did not have an IVF clinic became a matter of personal and professional concern for Baikoshkarova.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBy 1991, only 50 IVF babies had been born through Professor Zdanovsky\u2019s work [Valery Mstislavovich Zdanovsky was one of the pioneers of IVF in the USSR]. I saw my first publication about IVF in 1990 in the journal Vrach<\/em>. It said that Professor Leonov\u2019s work had been successful [Boris Vasilyevich Leonov was one of the pioneers of IVF in the USSR and was involved in the birth of the first child conceived through IVF in the Soviet Union].<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I thought: if others can do it, why can\u2019t I? Perhaps I felt a sense of pride and responsibility for my nation and my people. I had already begun to feel ashamed of having to tell patients every day that this method was unavailable in our country and that we simply could not help them,\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Soviet era, women were treated for infertility only until the age of 32. Beyond that age, further treatment was considered ineffective because doctors did not have access to the advanced technologies needed to help them, added Baikoshkarova, who studied under Professors Zdanovsky and Leonov. According to her, conservative treatment methods and surgery could help only about 20% of patients at best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even Saltanat\u2019s husband, Batyr Bekmussayev, initially considered her dream of introducing IVF in Kazakhstan unrealistic. Despite his skepticism, however, for four years he financed Saltanat\u2019s training trips and professional visits to Moscow and Adler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\u0411\u0430\u0442\u044b\u0440<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In April 1995, Bekmussayev registered Ecomed, Kazakhstan\u2019s first IVF Center<\/strong>, and purchased and brought the necessary equipment from Moscow at his own expense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut at that time, it was not only me \u2014 even obstetricians and gynecologists themselves were rather dismissive whenever IVF was discussed. It seemed like something out of science fiction, almost unbelievable. No one knew where to find funding for such a new undertaking, who trained specialists or where they could be trained, or even how such a project could be organized in the first place. I myself had only a vague idea of what the future held for this mysterious abbreviation. I thought Saltanat would eventually calm down,\u201d Batyr recalled years later in the book An Honest Story<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The successful birth of Kazakhstan\u2019s first IVF baby did not sit well with critics, who attempted \u2014 and, according to the article, continue to attempt \u2014 to claim credit for someone else\u2019s achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople envied us, put obstacles in our way, and wanted to destroy us,\u201d Saltanat says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years of IVF treatment in Kazakhstan, more than 16,000 children have been born through IVF<\/strong>. At major centers, at least two to three babies are born every day. Since 2010, Kazakhstan has provided state-funded quotas for IVF programs, which have resulted in the birth of nearly 2,000 children<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
