Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It is caused by the intracellular bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the main concerns associated with chlamydia is that the infection is often asymptomatic. Many women and men have no typical signs of infection and may therefore remain unaware that they are infected for a prolonged period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Urogenital chlamydia is caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, an obligate intracellular bacterium. Its developmental cycle includes two main forms: the elementary body, which is the infectious extracellular form, and the reticulate body, which replicates inside the host cell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incubation period of chlamydia may range from approximately 1 to 3 weeks, although symptoms can sometimes appear later. Chlamydia may also occur together with other sexually transmitted infections, including gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma infections, genital herpes, and human papillomavirus (HPV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Symptoms of Chlamydia in Men<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Symptoms in men may resemble mild urethritis and can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cloudy urine or purulent urethral discharge;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
General weakness;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Swollen or painful testicles;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mild pain or burning during urination;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Urethral discharge that may occasionally contain traces of blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Possible complications of chlamydia in men include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reactive arthritis (Reiter syndrome), which may be associated with urethritis, arthritis, conjunctivitis, and skin lesions;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prostatitis or proctitis;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Narrowing of the urethra due to scarring, which in some cases may require surgical treatment;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Impaired spermatogenesis and male infertility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Symptoms of Chlamydia in Women<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Symptoms in women may resemble those of other sexually transmitted infections and can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Abnormal vaginal discharge, which may have an unpleasant odor;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lower abdominal or pelvic pain;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Frequent urge to urinate;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Itching or burning during urination;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Weakness and fever;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Menstrual irregularities or bleeding between periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Untreated chlamydia may lead to complications such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID);<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Increased risk of ectopic pregnancy;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Infertility;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reactive arthritis (Reiter syndrome).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Transmission of Chlamydia<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chlamydia is primarily transmitted through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sexual contact with an infected partner;<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Transmission from an infected mother to her baby during childbirth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chlamydia is not generally transmitted through bedding, personal household items, swimming pools, saunas, baths, showers, or other shared facilities because Chlamydia trachomatis does not survive well outside the human body.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
