Fake news is spreading!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who Really Was Kazakhstan\u2019s \u201cFirst IVF Girl\u201d?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently, the media reported that Kazakhstan\u2019s first girl conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF), who was born 24 years ago, had herself become a mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Article:<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cKazakhstan\u2019s First IVF Girl Becomes a Mother\u201d<br>https:\/\/tengrinews.kz\/kazakhstan_news\/pervaya-kazahstanskaya-devochka-iz-probirki-stala-mamoy-381738\/<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The article also stated that physician Lyudmila Badelbayeva performed the IVF procedure for the girl\u2019s mother in 1996 at the Institute of Reproductive Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response, ECOMED, an infertility treatment clinic established on April 18, 1995 by renowned embryologist and reproductive medicine specialist Saltanat Baikoshkarova, states that well-known historical facts have been misrepresented. The situation could also be described as an \u201cattempt to rewrite the history of IVF in Kazakhstan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, the first girl in Kazakhstan to be conceived through IVF was conceived at the small Ecomed laboratory and was born on July 31, 1996. The IVF program that resulted in her birth was led by ECOMED Scientific Director Saltanat Baikoshkarova.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a well-known and widely recognized fact documented in archival video and photographic materials, as well as newspaper and magazine articles published at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She is now 23 years old and studies at a university in the United Kingdom. The issue was that the management of the Human Reproduction Center in Alma-Ata attempted to challenge Saltanat Baikoshkarova\u2019s role in this achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a long time, the ECOMED Clinic was not granted a license to perform in vitro fertilization. In 2015, Saltanat Baikoshkarova\u2019s husband, Batyr Bekmussayev, CEO of Ecomed, published the book&nbsp;<em>An Honest Story<\/em>, which described the many difficulties faced by these medical pioneers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 In the early 1990s, I worked as a laboratory physician at the Marriage and Family Consultation Center, which was later renamed the City Human Reproduction Center (CHRC). I performed semen analysis and introduced artificial insemination using either the husband\u2019s or donor sperm. But this was not enough to address the problem of infertility, and I became focused on finding new methods of infertility treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1991, I had the opportunity to attend a scientific conference on IVF in Sochi together with Yuri Verlinsky from the United States, \u2014 says Saltanat Baikoshkarova, founder of IVF in Kazakhstan. \u2014 It was there that I had a life-changing meeting with Valery Zdanovsky, one of the founders of IVF in the USSR and the first president of the Russian Association of Human Reproduction (RAHR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later, I met Boris Leonov, the \u201cfather\u201d of the first IVF baby born in the USSR. For reproductive medicine specialists, the history of IVF babies is inseparably linked with his name. In 1985, it was he who managed to secure approximately half a million dollars to equip an IVF laboratory in Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ECOMED Clinic was registered on April 18, 1995, at 70 Sedova Street in Alma-Ata and initially rented premises at the City Human Reproduction Center. The laboratory began operating immediately after registration but was soon forced to relocate to the Diplomatic Corps building of the Council of Ministers Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the work already underway and the results that had been achieved, obtaining a license remained a long-standing problem. This became the beginning of ECOMED\u2019s future difficulties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1996, a second IVF team was established at the City Human Reproduction Center and began its work that same year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 The price of an IVF procedure was set at KZT 18,350, which at the exchange rate of the time was approximately $300. We used instruments, equipment, consumables, masks, and caps that we had personally brought from Moscow, carrying them ourselves and as hand luggage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We started our first IVF program in early October at the Ecomed laboratory located in the CHRC building. The first pregnancy occurred in November 1995, and our joy knew no bounds. But at the end of November, because of constant rolling power outages, we had to suspend the IVF program, \u2014 recalls Saltanat Baikoshkarova.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To avoid further problems with electricity, the ECOMED Clinic relocated to the Diplomatic Corps building of the Council of Ministers Hospital in Alma-Ata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014 In early December 1995, we resumed our work at the Council of Ministers Hospital. My colleague, gynecologist Tatyana Kopylova, and I were delighted that we would no longer have to deal with rolling power outages. It took us some time to move our laboratory from the CHRC to the Council of Ministers Hospital, \u2014 explains the founder of IVF in Kazakhstan. \u2014 And our \u201cfirstborn,\u201d a girl, was born on July 31, 1996.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The book&nbsp;<em>An Honest Story<\/em>&nbsp;describes these events in greater detail:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was a truly historic period: Kazakhstan\u2019s first IVF team had set out on its own! Newspapers and magazines regularly published articles about ECOMED. Naturally, this could not help but irritate certain people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On July 31, the first piece of wonderful news arrived from Almaty: the first woman who had undergone IVF had safely given birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saltanat immediately returned to work and sent an urgent announcement to all media outlets with the headline: \u2018Kazakhstan\u2019s First Baby Conceived Through IVF Has Been Born.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following morning, our telephone was literally ringing nonstop with calls from journalists. We had to organize an emergency press conference in the lobby of the Diplomatic Corps building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the article about the \u2018first baby\u2019 was published, Saltanat was summoned to the CHRC, where she faced fierce criticism. They claimed that the published information was incorrect and demanded an immediate retraction in the newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Threats were also directed at the newspaper\u2019s editor-in-chief, reinforced by the authority of an influential academician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afterward, the author of the article was instructed by her management to conduct a journalistic investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had to go to the editorial office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the newspaper office, I was met by a young woman who spoke both languages fluently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Aren\u2019t you ashamed of deceiving the entire country by spreading such false information?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She immediately demanded that a meeting be arranged with the woman who had given birth so that she could verify the facts as part of her investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After lunch, Tatyana, Saltanat, the journalist, and I went to the maternity hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman who had given birth was a lawyer by profession and could quite reasonably have accused us of interfering with her private life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the hospital, the journalist asked to speak with her privately, while we were told to wait in the corridor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who could have explained to us what a journalistic investigation was supposed to involve?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We stood frozen in the corridor, not knowing how it would end. We felt like schoolchildren who had done something wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About twenty minutes later, the journalist came out with a satisfied smile and passed on a message from our patient:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Come in. She is waiting for you.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The four of us entered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I barely knew her personally, while Saltanat and Tatyana began hugging her one after another. All three women burst into tears of joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After calming down somewhat, the young mother described how surprised she had been by the journalist\u2019s sudden appearance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018I was lying there, minding my own business, when suddenly a very young woman rushed into the room, introduced herself as a journalist from some publication, and started bombarding me with questions. Who performed the follicular aspiration? Who was in the laboratory? I could barely keep up with answering her questions.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mother of Kazakhstan\u2019s first IVF girl spoke slightly breathlessly, almost as though she felt guilty before us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018My follicular aspiration was performed without anesthesia. Tatyana Pavlovna performed it, and Saltanat Berdenovna stood beside her with the test tubes, collecting the follicular fluid obtained from my ovaries,\u2019 she explained, looking somewhat puzzled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Saltanat Berdenovna accompanied my husband when he went to provide the semen sample. She showed us the laboratory. Then, two days later, before the embryo transfer, she asked whether we wanted to see our embryos under the microscope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was very touching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saltanat Berdenovna took my husband and me into the laboratory after having us change into sterile clothing. She removed the dishes from the incubator and showed us our embryos one by one under the microscope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She told us: \u201cHere is your future child.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To me, all of this seemed like science fiction!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It truly was a miracle, something difficult to comprehend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Saltanat Berdenovna came for the embryo transfer with a catheter in her hand. Tatyana Pavlovna and Saltanat Berdenovna performed the transfer together,\u2019 she continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The journalistic investigation was complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two or three days later, a lengthy article was published in one of Kazakhstan\u2019s leading newspapers. In keeping with journalistic standards, it presented different perspectives and expert opinions regarding our work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of those commenting emphasized that ECOMED did not have a license to perform this type of work. Therefore, in their view, we had no right to perform IVF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Naturally, the final word belonged to the influential academician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All that remained for the public was to sympathize with us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And all this controversy surrounded a small laboratory occupying approximately seventy square meters, consisting of only three rooms and staffed by just three specialists!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt that time, ECOMED consisted of an embryologist, Saltanat; a gynecologist, Tatyana Pavlovna; and a nurse, Aina\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The young specialists finally received their license to perform IVF only in the spring of 1998. It was signed by Krymbek Kusherbayev, then Minister of Education, Healthcare and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, ECOMED has an extensive network of clinics in Almaty, Astana, Atyrau, Aktau, Taraz, Shymkent, Kyzylorda, and Ust-Kamenogorsk, employing hundreds of qualified specialists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The clinic has successfully completed national accreditation aimed at ensuring and improving the quality of medical care. Based on its high treatment effectiveness, the state entrusts ECOMED with state-funded IVF programs. The clinic also regularly conducts audits of its IVF laboratories with the participation of international experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Background Information<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1995, the Ecomed Clinic was included in the World IVF Registry in France as Kazakhstan\u2019s first IVF laboratory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2005, the clinic\u2019s management participated in an international congress held in London under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth II to celebrate the birth of the world\u2019s two-millionth IVF baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobel Prize laureate and world-renowned Professor Robert Edwards of Cambridge, United Kingdom, whose pioneering work contributed to the birth of the world\u2019s first IVF baby in 1978, personally congratulated Kazakhstan\u2019s first IVF laboratory through its head, Saltanat Baikoshkarova.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the clinic provides infertility diagnosis and treatment using advanced scientific and medical technologies.
