Balanoposthitis
Balanoposthitis is an acute or chronic inflammatory condition affecting the glans penis and foreskin. Balanoposthitis may cause pain, itching, burning, inflammation, and swelling of the glans and foreskin. Possible complications include urethritis or paraphimosis.
The main causes of balanoposthitis are fungal infections, viruses, and bacteria. In rare cases, the condition may develop as a result of an allergic reaction or exposure to toxins.
Symptoms of Balanoposthitis
pain,
ulcers and sores,
purulent discharge,
itching and burning,
hyperemia (redness),
cracks,
difficulty urinating.
Forms of Balanoposthitis
- Acute balanoposthitis:
simple balanoposthitis (catarrhal balanoposthitis) — mild irritation and slight itching;
erosive balanoposthitis — the appearance of clearly defined areas with white, flaky, scaly lesions, followed by the development of large areas of extremely painful erosion;
gangrenous balanoposthitis — the appearance of hyperemic areas and signs of systemic intoxication; severe ulceration with purulent discharge, potentially progressing to perforation and necrosis of the foreskin; bleeding; in advanced cases, gangrenous balanoposthitis may progress to gangrene of the penis;
pustular-ulcerative balanoposthitis — the development of multiple pustular lesions with a tendency to form trophic ulcers.
- Chronic balanoposthitis is characterized by signs of an ulcerative-hypertrophic form.
- Indurative balanoposthitis (a rare form) — dystrophic changes and shrinkage of the affected tissues.
